The next generation Low Biomass

DK Secret is the new definition of low biomass featuring a unique combination of traits and characteristics to reduce risk.

Features
• Vigorous Establishment and Compact Autumn Growth
• Double Phoma Resistance giving strong resistance to Stem Canker
• Very good resistance to Light Leaf Spot
• Mid earliness of spring regrowth with early/mid flowering
• Very short final height with excellent standing ability
• Early maturity
• High yield potential and oil content
• Pod Shatter Resistance

GROWING DK SECRET

Where to Grow

 • When early drilling due to low risk of over development pre winter
• Where easy management is key:
   – Strong disease resistance to Stem Canker and Light Leaf Spot
   – Short flowering season to limit exposure to Sclerotinia
   – Short canopy to which it is easy to apply fertilisers and sprays
   – Ease of combining and increased combine speeds
• When lodging risk is high due to:
   – High fertility of sites
   – Exposed locations of high rainfall and frequent high winds

Growing advice

 • Seed rate should target an even plant stand of 25-50 plants/m2 in spring depending on the situation
• Double phoma resistance means phoma leaf spot thresholds for treatment may not be met until later in the autumn if at all.
• Light Leaf Spot should be monitored but high resistance reduces the risk of severe infections.
• PGRs are not necessary to prevent lodging but may provide canopy architecture benefits to improve light penetration and interception by leaves.
• Ensure the Green Area Index is accurately determined at the start of spring growth before deciding Nitrogen rates
• Pod Shatter Resistance reduces the risk of seed losses approaching and during harvest and will protect the crop where harvest is delayed

Agronomic profile
Autumn development: LOW BIOMASS
Agronomic description:

DK Secret suits drilling early or in the main window. It suits late drilling on very fertile favourable sites. It has a prostrate autumn growth habit and mid earliness of starting spring development before flowering mid-early and has early maturity. The final height is very short and enables fast harvesting.

Early maturity: 6
Earliness flowering: 7
Lodging resistance: 8
Disease resistance
Stem canker: 8
Light leaf spot: 7

DK Secret is a vigorous low-biomass restored hybrid, capable of high output, with an exceptionally attractive combination of agronomic features that has led to it being the only addition to the whole UK Recommended List for 2017/18. Pod shatter resistance is combined with early maturity and excellent stem stiffness. On the disease side, double phoma resistance is added to an ‘7’ rating for Light Leaf Spot. This variety is an obvious choice for early drilling and low input situations, and its ease of management combined with high yields will be of interest to a wide range of UK growers.
